Legend of Chili Ristras
Legend has it ,in the Southwest, that hanging a chili ristras brings good luck. They begin to show up on doors, gates and entrys in the fall after the chilis turn red. It seems to represent a sign of welcome adding warmth and tranquility to the area. Chile ristras grace doorways of many homes and many old wooden gates and entryways. They need to be replaced once a year or at least every 2 years.
Chili ristras and wreaths are so colorful and welcoming they are used abundantly at Christmastime.
The Legend of the Poinsettia:
It was Christmas Eve in a small town in Mexico. Everyone joined in the procession to the church, bearing fine gifts to place at the manger-except for one poor peasant girl. She was crying because she had no gift for Baby Jesus. Suddenly an angel appeared, saying" Whatever you give from your heart will make Jesus happy" So the little girl gathered green weeds from the roadside and carried them into the church. As she reached the manger, the crown of each plant turned brilliant red, making a bouquet of beautiful scarlet flowers, Poinsettias for Baby Jesus. The Poinsettia is known in it's native country of Mexico as "flor de la Nochebuena" ( flower of the Holy Night) because it's upper leaves turn bright red in mid-winter. It has become a traditional Christmas plant.
